Several Variations of Insulated Units Available in Owen Sound
Owen Sound Glass Service specializes in the installation of insulated glass panels, which consist of two panes of sealed, air-tight, plain glass separated by a spacer. Although several variations of insulated glass panels are available, their basic configuration always remains the same. Because the spacer prevents heat from flowing from one pane to the other, this type of unit is resistant to the elements.
A single pane of glass has an R-Value of about 0.2, while a basic insulated unit R-Value is about 1.6. Several optional upgrades can increase the R-Value, such as argon gas, which increases it by 1 point, and Low-E coated glass, which increases it another point. Below you can find some upgrade options for our insulated units.
This type of glass is coated with a low-emissivity material so it can reflect back heat outside during the summer or back into the house during the winter depending upon where this type of unit is installed.
Because argon is a gas that is heavier than air, when it’s added to an insulated unit, it provides a higher insulation value.
Glass that has been tempered or laminated, this type of addition is recommended for doors and high-risk windows because it can reduce noise transmissions and increase overall impact resistance.
Pattern or tint glass
If privacy is an issue but you want to maintain an aesthetic quality, pattern or tint glass serves as an ideal option.
As the name implies, triple-pane glass uses three panes of glass with two spacers. Often costing and weighing more, the end performance gains do not justify the means of adding this option in most cases.
Available in many sizes (6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm, 14mm and 16mm), the spacer can make insulated units range from ½” thick up to 1” thick. Measured from the outside surface of the outer pane to the outside surface of the inner pane, thickness usually falls into the ¾” to 7/8” thickness range for residential windows, and between 7/8” and 1” for commercial windows.
